KOCHI: The Special Investigation Group-II of the Ernakulam Crime Branch arrested the main accused in a counterfeit currency case, who has been absconding for nearly one year. The accused was identified as Soman, 49, Kannothuparappady, Irapuram, Kunnathunadu. Perumbavoor police registered a case against the accused and three others for attempting to distribute counterfeit currency notes of denominations Rs. 500 and Rs. 100, total worth nearly Rs. 5,500, at Perumbavoor KSRTC bus stand on March 28, 2007. Mohanan, Vysakh and Vijayan were arrested in this connection. The case was later handed over to the Crime Branch. After the case was registered, Soman had been hiding in Agali, Mannarkadu, Attapadi and Mangalore areas. The Crime Branch team led by Superintendent of Police P.H. Ashraf and DySp Alex K. John that investigated the case tracked the movement of the accused and arrested him from Perumbavoor on Friday. During interrogation, it was known that Soman was the main link in the counterfeit currency racket. The Crime Branch has also started probing the source of the fake currency. The accused was produced before Perumbavoor Judicial First Class Magistrate.
