Bangalore: The pass percentage in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination held in April declined to 66.37 from 73.21 last year, even as students from rural areas performed better than those from urban areas. Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, G. Kumar Naik, Commissioner of Public Instruction, said that 5.56 lakh of the 8.39 lakh students, who appeared for the examination, had passed. The pass percentage of fresh candidates is 69.63. It is 52.02 among repeaters and 13.26 among private candidates. “As usual, girls have fared better than boys. Of the 4.53 lakh boys who took the examination, 2.9 lakh have passed. Among girls, 2.65 lakh of the 3.85 lakh girls who appeared for the examination have passed. Three students have scored the highest mark by securing 618 out of 625,” Mr. Naik said. Many students had failed in Mathematics and this had brought down the average pass percentage. As many as 285 students had scored zero in the subject, while 98 of them had scored 100, he said. Mr. Naik said that among the education districts, Chikkodi has secured the first place with a pass percentage of 84.71, followed by Chitradurga and Udupi with pass percentages of 79.53 and 79.44 respectively. Bidar district has the lowest pass percentage of 27.39. He said that the pass percentage in government schools was 62.01. It was 70.33 in aided schools and 74.10 in unaided schools. As many as 64 schools had recorded zero percentage, of which two are government schools, five aided and 57 are unaided, he added. “We will check if any of these schools have been consistently performing poorly. If the school is unaided, then we will withdraw recognition,” he said. Mr. Naik said that the pass percentage of visually impaired candidates was 85.06. It was 51.72 for hearing and speech impaired and 53.23 for those suffering from dyslexia and spastics, he said.
