SCENE OF CRIME: Police have sealed the room in which Shanti Devi was found dead in Chennai on Saturday. CHENNAI: Four persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of 57-year-old Shanti Devi, a resident of Raghunaikalu Street in Sowcarpet, on Saturday evening. According to the police, she was murdered in her apartment by her relative, Amit Kumar (27), and his three friends and robbed of her jewellery. Amit Kumar, who was unemployed, was in the habit of taking money from Shanti Devi. Joint Commissioner (North) M. Ravi said Amit Kumar and his friends, Prakash, Chetan and Ramesh, had allegedly attempted to kill the woman last month. On Saturday morning, Amit Kumar tried to enter her house but left when he noticed people in the flat. At 4 p.m. he went up. Noticing the door ajar, he signalled to his friends who went into the kitchen. Amit Kumar gagged the victim, while Chetan and Prakash held her. One of them caught hold of her neck and pushed her down and hit her against the floor. She began bleeding. The three men removed her jewellery and ransacked the almirah, but found nothing of value. Through a friend they approached a pawn broker and pledged the jewellery for Rs. 30,000. Shanti Devi’s murder came to light around 7 p.m., when two women relatives found the door of the apartment locked from outside. When they went in they found the deceased in a pool of blood with injuries to her nose and ear. They also found jewellery on her person missing.
