21 couples tie the knot

They were given gift items worth Rs. 8,000



Special occasion: The Bishop of Mangalore Diocese Aloysius Paul D’ Souza solemnising the marriages in Mangalore on Sunday.

MANGALORE: Twenty-one couples from the Christian community tied the knot at a mass marriage ceremony organised by St. Vincent Paul Society at Rosario Cathedral, Pandeshwar, here on Sunday.

Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore, solemnised the marriages and blessed the couples.

The couples were from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Mysore and Kasaragod (Kerala) districts.

According to Rudolph Tauro, president of the society, each couple was given gift items worth Rs. 8,000. In addition, they were given fixed deposit receipts of Rs. 4,000, which would mature after three years. The brides were given two saris and a chudidar each, and the grooms a pair of trousers and a shirt. Besides, the couples were given a set of steel utensils. “Most of them were from poor families,” he said. The society spent Rs. 20,000 towards their travel expenses. Sunday’s event was the 34th annual mass marriage ceremony organised by the society. As many as 486 couples have entered into wedlock in so far. With this, 507 couples have tied the nuptial knot, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Louis Pinto, president, Mannd Sobhan, a cultural organisation, advised the couples to keep their expenses under control, and added that marriage was a special occasion. Fr. Stany Goveas, Parish priest of the Rosario Cathedral welcomed the gathering. Felix Albuquerque, vice-president, Parish Council of the Cathedral, was present.
