KOCHI: The EMS Cooperative Library at Kakkanad passed yet another milestone on Sunday when a ‘cartoon corner’ was opened in the vast library. The section is dedicated entirely to cartooning – with emphasis on the political variety – visual arts as a whole, architecture, history of art, photography, sculpture etc. T. K. A. Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, inaugurated the ‘cartoon corner.’ He said that cartoons had a tremendous impact on the society and lifted one’s spirits. Cartoons often convey better than long articles. He said that he was surprised by the initiatives of the Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank in opening a library for the public and making efforts to promote arts. The ‘cartoon corner’ is, in fact, a unique initiative of the Cooperative Library at the instance of the Kerala Cartoon Academy, which celebrated its silver jubilee last year.President of the Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank M. M. Monaye said that the ‘cartoon corner’ would have more than 300 books exclusively on political cartoons as well as about 2,000 books on visual arts, history of arts, sculpture etc. The ‘cartoon corner’ is among the several steps taken by the library to add value to the simple concept of a place for reading and borrowing books. When the library was started about seven years ago, it was great news for the people of Kakkanad who were surprised to find a vast garden attached to the library. The popularity of the library has increased since then and people from other parts of the district too frequent the library now. Mr. Monaye said that the library has grown beyond all expectations, thanks to the tremendous response from the public. The inauguration of the ‘cartoon corner’ also saw the honouring of three veteran cartoonists. Cartoonist Yesudasan felicitated veterans Siri Master, P. V. Krishnan and Sri Nathan on the occasion. A seminar on cartoons and the media followed.
