After food, film and shopping fetes, it is the turn of music. A music fair is on at the Police Club hall on Pavamani Road in Kozhikode. The nine-day event will give music aficionados a rare opportunity to listen to a rare collection of soulful melodies, with a wide range of CDs and DVDs of different genres of music, including Hindustani vocal, Carnatic classical, Ghazal, Qawwali, classical fusion, etc. “We are conducting it like a music festival,” says V.V. Ram achandran, an organiser. The city, known to have an ear for Hindustani, Qawwali and Ghazal music, will be treated to a rich collection of Ghazal masters such as Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Begum Akhtar. “The eight-CD pack of the best of Ghulam Ali titled ‘The Magic of Ghulam Ali’ is one of the most sought after collections,” says Mr. Ramachandran. The Hindustani instrumental category has a series from world-renowned maestros, including Ustad Bismillah Khan (shehnai), L. Subramaniam (violin), Pandit Pannalal Ghosh and Hari Prasad Chaurasia (flute), Pandit Ravi Shankar (sitar), Ustad Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain (tabla). The collection of Carnatic classical vocal ranges from that of masters like M.D. Ramanathan, K.V. Narayana Swami, M.S. Subbulakshmi to new generation vocalists like P. Unnikrishnan. The rare collection of Malayalam film songs includes that of K.P. Udayabhanu, Salil Chowdhury and M.S. Baburaj. “We have concentrated mostly on works that are not otherwise available in the market,” say the organisers. The film songs in the Tamil category include collections of M.K. Tyagaraja Bhagavatar, Kannadasan and T.M. Soundar Rajan while the Hindi film songs range from Talat Mahmood, Mohammed Rafi and Suraiyya to new generation singers. In Classical fusion segment, Pandit Prem Joshua’s album is one of the rare CDs on show. The organisers have also made available CDs of light music, bhajans, keerthans, devotional and prayer songs besides other forms of music like folk songs. CDs of traditional art forms like Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyatam and Oppana are also available at the fair, at prices ranging from Rs.50 to 150, said the organisers. Jabir Mushthari
