On the move: Senior citizens participating in the Indian Masters Cross Country Race in Mysore on Sunday. MYSORE: Several persons including senior citizens from different parts of the country participated in the Indian Masters Cross Country Race 2008 held here on Sunday. Senior citizens from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh lined up at the North Gate of Mysore Palace early in the day for the cross country race organised jointly by the Mysore District Masters Athletic Association, Masters Athletic Association of Karnataka and the Masters Athletic Federation of India. The participants sprinted through the main thoroughfares of the city to reach Oval Grounds near the office of the Deputy Commissioner, where the race concluded. The prize distribution ceremony was also held at Oval Grounds. The race titled “Health Run 2008” was flagged off by Mayor of Mysore Ayub Khan at 7 a.m. just outside the North Gate of Mysore Palace. In the 75-plus men’s category, Nandappa Basappa Yesamani of Bagalkot came first with a timing of 6 minutes 12 seconds, followed by H.S. Flora from Delhi and P. Chandrashekar of Kerala. Mysore athlete N.R. Shankar Rao came fourth. In the 2-km “Run for Health” event, R.K. Mohan Kumar of Tamil Nadu came first followed by C. Prem and K. Mallikarjunaswamy of Mysore. In the women’s section, Smitha of Mysore bagged the first place while R. Chaitra and S. Vinushree, both from Mysore, bagged the second and third place respectively.
