Call for phased implementation of prohibition

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Madya Nirodhana Samithi has appealed to Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan to take immediate steps to impose prohibition in a phased manner in Kerala.

Reacting to the Chief Minister’s statement that the majority of youth in Kerala were becoming addicts to liquor, State secretary of the samithi J.M.Rahim called for legislation to impose prohibition.

He was addressing a gathering of prohibition activists in front of the secretariat on Sunday, the fourth day of a relay hunger strike by the Samithi.

The agitation is to press for amendments to the Panchayati Raj-Nagarapalika Act to restore the sovereign right of the people to decide whether a liquor shop should be allowed in a particular area.

Samithi leaders, including R.Narayanan Thampi, F.M.Lasser, G.Sadanandan, M.S.Shafi, K.Rajendran, Odanavattom Vijayaprakash and Francis Perumana, spoke.

Mr.Rahim is to observe fast on Monday, the fifth day of the agitation. District-level leaders of the Samithi will take part in the hunger strike in the subsequent days.
