Subhasini There is a subtle shift in quality of afternoon programming on almost all the channels these days. Since this is the time of the day when homemakers constitute a major chunk of those glued to the telly, the focus for channels is to curry out something that could appeal to their palate. Earlier, the shows meant for women used to be just talk and talk and more talk. From one issue to another, they would hop aimlessly with incessant chat on subjects that episode producer assumed to interest women. But the coming of new channels and the consequent competition for ratings turning stiffer, the same shows are forced to go in for a metamorphosis in terms of both content and treatment. These days, the shows have turned visually richer and a certain thought seem to be going in making them. Unlike earlier times, the shows are travelling more out of the studios and trying to capture a variety of topics that suit the target viewers from different backdrops. Shopping tips to beauty care to marital issues, there is a contemporary touch to the presentation. Then there are latest fitness gurus coming out with ways to keep one fit and successful women sharing their climb to the top. ETV2’s ‘Sakhi’ continue to retain its charm and position in terms of presentation and quality. The wide variety that it packs has a certain appeal for those keen on a wholesome show. TV9 has Jhansi holding court with ‘Naveena’ and at times initiating debates on issues which some would have squirmed in discomfort to discuss on the small screen. TV5 has ‘Dharani’ and Subhashini’s ‘Snehita’, the latter definitely trying its best to captivate viewers with a different presentation style. After a long stint with ‘Sakhi’, Subhashini comfortably continues to retain her position of a favoured anchor for shows meant for women. However, the best news for women viewers is that a channel exclusive meant for them is in the making. Soon, the first of its kind channel is expected to be on air. Just wait. T. Lalith Singh
