PUDUCHERRY: The 10-day Gram Shree Mela, an exhibition-cum-sale of products made Self-Help Group members, came to an end on May 4 after selling products worth Rs.1.48 lakh and fetching orders for Rs.1.61 lakh. The mela was organised by Pondicherry Multipurpose Social Service Society and sponsored by the Council for Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology , Hyderabad, from April 25. With 58 stalls, the exhibition displayed a number of SHG products, including bags, soft toys, sarees, jewellery, pillow covers, pickles and candles. “The mela had a number of participants from tsunami-affected coastal areas in Puducherry and Cuddalore. We welcome this kind of an initiative to help SHG members to market their products. We have also asked them to utilise our marketing facility. The government has allotted stalls for us in New Delhi,” said P. Mathew Samuel, project director, District Rural Development Agency, Puducherry, at the valedictory function. The exhibition has fetched a number of orders from foreigners, including for bags and pillow covers. Local councillor Indira Somani, Executive Director of PMSSS Fr. R. Ratchagar, Assistant Director Fr. V. Albert Thambidurai and Young Professional from Regional Centre CAPART Suman Shukla spoke.
