K. Subramanian

NAGAPATTINAM: Fishermen of six coastal villages in Tarangampadi Taluk in Nagapattinam district have opposed the construction of a gas plant by a private firm at Pillaiperumanallur near Tarangampadi in the district.

Leaders of the six fishermen villages in Tarangampadi Taluk told The Hindu on Sunday that they have urged the private firm to stop the construction of the gas plant.

They pointed out that the private firm had proposed to bring crude oil through pipeline from Parangipettai (Portonovo) to the plant and the crude oil waste would be let into the sea that would affect the livelihood of the fishermen of the six villages.

Massive agitation

The fishermen have decided to stage massive agitation and demonstration on May 15 if the private firm did not stop the construction of the gas plant.
