Anantapur
Pacifying mode: Congress MLA B. Narayana Reddy and MP A. Venkatarami Reddy talking to party corporators in Anantapur on Sunday. ANANTAPUR: The voice of dissent within the Congress corporators in Anantapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) against Mayor R. Parasuram and his group of corporators, appears to have been capped by the party managers for the time being now. Anantapur MP A. Venkatarami Reddy and legislator B. Narayana Reddy held talks with the dissident corporators here on Sunday and pacified them so that the problem is not aggravated further. The dissident corporators led by Deputy Mayor S. Sreeramulu were learnt to have been told to have patience so that the party leadership could study their concerns and take appropriate action to do justice to them. The MP and MLA were stated to have told the 15 Congress corporators including Deputy Mayor and an independent to wait for some time and not take any hasty action till the issue was taken up. The MP and MLA told newspersons that they have already heard the concerns of the corporators and would resolve them after discussing the matter with the State leadership. In all, 16 corporators handed over their resignation letter to Mr. Narayana Reddy on Saturday after the differences among them, between Mayor and Deputy Mayor groups, were out in the open. The ones supporting the Deputy Mayor accused the Mayor of neglecting their divisions and overlooking them in all respects. Differences between Mayor Parasuram and Deputy Mayor Sreeramulu were out in the open from the day one when the Mayor assumed office on October 1, 2005. A few Congress leaders had acknowledged during private talks then that there was an agreement between the two groups that Mr. Parasuram should step down after a three-year term. Now that the ‘expiry of term’ is approaching the other group appears to have stepped up its pressure for pocketing the Mayor post after September 30 this year. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor had a heated argument during the council meeting last week and they had even gone to the extent of challenging each other on settling scores outside. There were several other instances of differences between the two coming out in the open during the last three years including the issue of allotment of chambers.
