Begusarai: Police have decided not to press charges against the Lok Janshakti Party MP from Balia in Bihar, Surajbhan Singh, in the murder of an Additional Public Prosecutor. ‘Charges false’After a six-month inquiry into APP Ramnaresh Sharma’s murder, Superintendent of Police (Begusarai) Amit Lodha said, “The evidences brought on records and confessional statements of the arrested assailants suggest that the charges against Surajbhan are untrue.” “The mastermind behind the murder was Anil Mahto of Parbanda village, a hardened criminal facing several charges including the murder of an advocate Birendra here in 1996. Sharma was the prosecution lawyer in Birendra murder case in which Mahto has been named,” Lodha said on Sunday. He said investigations had revealed that Mahto murdered Sharma in collaboration with another jailed criminal Nandan Singh of Mokhtiyarpur village. “Nandan contacted one Lootan Chaudhary alias Amarnath Chaudhary of Dadpur village over telephone from jail and asked him to kill Sharma,” Lodha said. Sharma was shot dead at his residence in Begusarai town on November 8 last year and LJP MP Surajbhan was accused in the complaint lodged by his son Prabhakar Kumar Sharma. The APP’s murder had sparked off state-wide protests by lawyers for nearly a month and work in the courts across the state was severely affected. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had ordered the Crime Investigation Department to investigate the case. All the accused, including Chandan Singh, Nandan Singh, Anil Mahato, Ramchandra Thakur, Mukesh and Lootan Choudhary are in judicial custody here. PTI
