They turn to co-operative stores

With the inflation not relenting to ease and prices soaring to high levels, people, mainly from the middle income groups, in the district have started turning to the co-operative stores in the district in large numbers to avail the attractive rebate offers and get quality products at reasonable prices.

The Ponni Co-operative Supermarket, which runs stores in different parts of the district, witnesses a rise in the sales after the prices of several goods increased in the open retail market.

More number of people are coming to our supermarkets as they are able to save from 5 to 25 per cent on the grocery purchases, Society Special Officer S. Ramadoss points out.

People can buy Ponni Rice, which is sold at Rs. 24 a kg at the open market, for Rs. 21 at the co-operative store.

The Tuvar dal, which costs Rs. 43 to 48 a kg in the open retail market, is sold at Rs. 42.30.

The Urad Dal is sold at Rs. 40.80 a kg and green gram Rs. 36.

The society offers four per cent rebate on groceries, 5 to 6 per cent on cosmetics and two percent for rice and oil.

A maximum of 9 per cent rebate is offered for vegetables. The society has recently increased the rebate offered on medicines to 12 per cent from May 2.

“We have received a tremendous response for the new rebate scheme for medicines, co-operative officials say.

These attractive schemes have come as a relief for people, who are suffering due to soaring prices.

The average grocery and cosmetics business of the Ponni supermarket at the Old Bus Stand crossed Rs. 1 crore a month.

The Attur branch of the society gets a business of Rs. 12 lakh a month, Mr. Ramadoss told The Hindu.
