NEW DELHI: To ensure a nuisance-free ride for its bona fide commuters, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has installed 1,237 closed-circuit television cameras at all its 59 stations. The hi-tech surveillance system will become functional on Monday. The cameras have been installed to keep a close watch on suspicious activities inside the metro stations. The surveillance system will be monitored through command centres established at every station and also from the operational control centre. DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said the network of cameras would also act as a potent deterrent to eve-teasers and those who create nuisance inside the stations. Those caught in camera creating disturbance can be penalised heavily under the Delhi Metro (Operations and Maintenance) Act. A total of 58 cameras have been installed at Kashmere Gate and 47 at the Rajiv Chowk metro stations. Mr. Dayal said the elevated stations would be scanned thoroughly using 20 to 25 cameras, whereas about 40 cameras had been installed at the underground metro stations. The recordings will be retained for a fixed time period. GadgetsMr. Dayal said there are plans to install cameras inside the trains also, for which the gadgets would be procured in the Phase-II of the project. Hence, more than 600 coaches in the Phase-II would have cameras to keep an eye on all the movements inside the tube.
