12 trapped in lift at General Hospital in Chennai
K.S. Nikhil Kumar
CHENNAI: It was a harrowing experience for some patients and visitors who opted to use the lift at the Government General Hospital here on Saturday. At least 12 persons, including some senior citizens, were trapped in a lift in Tower Block 1 for nearly two hours from 5 p.m. The lift, with a carrying capacity of 1,800 kg and built to accommodate a stretcher, was coming down from the sixth floor when it got stuck between the ground and the first floor.
Dorairaj, a 70-year-old patient from Royapettah, who is to be operated on Sunday, was among them. He said that he was dehydrated and they had been trapped for quite some time.
He was unhappy that the hospital did not have a mechanism to handle such emergencies.
A middle-aged woman, Sumathi (name changed) who was also trapped in the lift, said that except for one, all the others were elderly persons. She had come to the hospital to meet one of her family members who is admitted there, she said.
Among those trapped was a teenager, whose left leg was heavily bandaged.
Shortly after the lift got stuck, Sumathi called the Fire Department, the police and the lift manufacturers whose number was found in the lift. Sumathi said that they had been stuck for over an hour, when the lift suddenly fell by two feet following rescue efforts by the lift manufacturer’s service personnel.
The lift door was eventually pushed open using a crowbar, almost an hour later. By then, all the people trapped inside were dehydrated, she said.
Chennai North Divisional Fire Officer Meenakshi Vijayakumar, who visited the hospital following the incident, said that her department had inspected the premises two days ago and had advised the authorities to take up maintenance work on the lifts.
