Need for independent body in higher education sector underlined

Staff Reporter

‘Efforts should be made to meet international standards’

‘Dynamic governance needed in the education system’

Bangalore: There is an urgent need to have an independent thinking body in the area of higher education, the former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University M.S. Thimmappa has said.

The occasion was a press conference held here on Saturday to announce that the draft constitution of the Forum of Former Vice-Chancellors of Karnataka State Universities was approved at the its first general body meeting held recently.

Making the announcement, M. Muniyamma, former Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, said that the meeting had also approved the names of members of the first executive body. The main objectives of the forum were to deliberate on issues of education pertaining to health, agriculture, technology and other relevant sectors; to organise conferences, seminars, workshops and training and help mould public opinion on current issues in education; take initiatives in matters of strategic importance and provide views to the authorities concerned, he said.

The forum would aim at promoting research and application-oriented activities through technology-enhanced delivery, invite eminent persons to deliver endowment, commemorative and other such lectures, and share experience and expertise in building institutes of excellence, deemed universities, autonomous institutions, and also in the process of evaluation, assessment and accreditation of institutions.

Mr. Thimmappa, a member of the executive committee, said: “The recommendations of various reports have not been implemented. An independent body will be able to create awareness among the public and pressure the Government,” he said.

Betterment

N.R. Shetty, president of the forum, said that considering that India is the youngest country in the world, in terms of composition of the population, there was a need to focus on bettering the education sector.

“We all have ideas. We need dynamic governance in the education system and ensure that it matches international standards,” he said.

The forum’s vice-president M. Mahadevappa, treasurer R.N. Srinivasa Gowda and executive committee member K. Balaveera Reddy spoke on the occasion.
