dated May 5, 1958: Nehru to continue in office

Prime Minister Nehru announced amidst deafening cheers his acceptance of the Congress Parliamentary Party’s resolution urging him not to relinquish his office at the party meeting on May 3 in New Delhi. Mr. Nehru said, “In all humility and with my deep feelings for what you have said, I shall not proceed to take this step that I suggested (last Tuesday). While both the leaders and rank and file felt relieved and happy at the turn of events, there was also a feeling of surprise at the almost abrupt termination of the episode.
