dated May 5, 1958: Antarctica conference

The United States on May 3 asked eleven other countries to join in an International Conference on ways of prolonging scientific co-operation and preventing political discord in Antarctica. The proposal was contained in identical notes to countries participating in International Geophysical Year activities in Antarctica and suggested that the conference would discuss concluding a treaty to put these principles into legal effect. United States officials said that the time or place for the Conference remained to be worked out in informal consultations. The note, addressed to Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union and Britain, was issued by the White House. President Eisenhower said in an accompanying statement “the United States is dedicated to the principle that the vast uninhabitated wastes of Antarctica shall be used only for peaceful purposes.”
