Unrelenting inflation

Steel is said to be one item which has contributed to the galloping inflation and, according to news reports, the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have warned steel producers not to cartelise and over-price it. But the fact remains that the government itself is the biggest producer of steel in the country. It is only logical that without the public sector SAIL and RINL leading the way, other producers would not have been able to raise the prices to the levels in which they are now.

The editorial ‘Unrelenting inflation’ gives a little hope as it points to some positive signals. The country is set to achieve record foodgrains production and the prices of some important agricultural items have softened and that these would be available to most of the people. However, the government still has to find ways to check price rise.

Instead of taking appropriate measures, the government is giving lame excuses such as rise in oil prices for the galloping inflation. There is no point hoping for a better monsoon.

The rising trend of inflation is only too worrying despite the belated measures taken. The only consolation is that a substantial food output is likely this monsoon. While the impact of the containing measures would be felt only in the long run, it is sad that they have been taken by the Finance Minister in a reactive and not preventive manner. No steps have been taken to eliminate cartels in the freight sector. The cost of labour involved in loading and unloading cargo is a direct addition to the freight rate. It is again passed on to consumers.
