MADURAI: The Federation of Consumer Organisations-Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry (FEDCOT) has urged the Government to appoint a State Food Commissioner at the earliest. A resolution to this effect was passed at the valedictory session of a training camp for consumer activists held here. The residential capacity building programme on food safety and quality control of drugs’ was conducted from April 26 to 28. Another resolution stressed that the Directorate of Drug Control and its inspection wing should be strengthened with adequate enforcement staff. The programme was organised by FEDCOT with the assistance of the World Bank and support and guidance of Ministry of Health and Lady Irwin College, New Delhi. Inaugurating the programme, P. Duraisingam, FEDCOT chairman, stressed the need for sensitising consumers at large through training imparted to consumer activists, who in turn would spread the message to the grassroots level through students, consumer clubs, self-help groups, pharmaceutical industries, medical representatives and street food vendors.
