Andhra Pradesh
The increase in pass percentage in Intermediate examination from 62.63 last year to 64.13 now is laudable. So is the number of first classes where the credit goes to private colleges. The Board of Intermediate Education has failed to supply the data of the performance of the Government colleges. During yesteryears, the Government colleges were commanding this stature but they have lost ground. What is also disturbing is the staggering number of illiterates and dropouts every year with no tangible steps taken by the authorities. There are many endowed with more talent than these passed candidates but are unable to continue studies due to financial constraints. The corporate colleges charge heavily and are beyond the reach of the deserving candidates of middle and lower classes. It is imperative that merit be encouraged, subsidising the cost of education in their case. N.V. Rama Rao Visakhaptnam Unscheduled power-cutsOf late, there have been many power-cuts in urban areas, including Visakhapatnam. The official explanation is faults in the feeders, failure of incoming power, etc. The Minister for power of A.P. makes a statement that there has been an increase of air-conditioners resulting in power breakdown. Does it mean that the Government while projecting the needs does not take into account the increase in power due to development and the availability from internal sources and quantum to be purchased from others to meet the deficit? Nowadays, the bureaucrats and technocrats are excelling the politicians in telling blatant lies without ever visualising their effect on their reputation. The sole aim appears to be to look to post-retirement engagements and helping their kith and kin. Otherwise, there does not appear to be any other reason. G.M. Rama Rao Visakhapatnam Be more public-friendlyAt the railway booking counter at MVP Colony, the reservation clerk accepts a bunch of reservation forms from commuters. The other day, people waiting in the queue almost attacked him for this. However, thanks to the intervention of some good citizens, the ugly scene was averted. I appeal to the railway authorities to ensure that only one form is allowed from each person for the convenience of the general public. P.S.K. Sudheer Visakhapatnam
