With no regular income, going is tough for them

Despite many odds, the couple is firm on one thing: saving at least Rs.1,000 a month

“We used to go to eateries with children once or twice a month and spend Rs.200 to Rs.250 each time. For the last five months going out has not been in our agenda and the children are confined to home despite their vacation. Watching television is the only entertainment for us,” says Chitra, a housewife.

Her husband K. Kumar (38) is a cutting master who undertakes work on contract basis.

Penury

Even buying toys for their children is a costly affair for them. Penury has become a part of their life in every move whether buying meat or vegetables.

Their children, Naresh (5) and Hemalatha (12), have started asking them why they are not buying play materials or even eatables.

“I used to buy ice cream for the kids every Sunday. But now I stopped it. Because I am not in a position to spend if they fall sick,” laments Mr. Kumar.

“It pains when our children ask us. We somehow convince them by saying something. Everything has become costly now,” he adds.

He earns Rs.1,500 to Rs.2,000 a week and lives in a small house in Sellammal Colony at a monthly rent of Rs.1,500.

There will be no wages for a week or a fortnight if he does not get work.

How his family is coming to terms with the rising prices?

“We don’t have regular income. So we have to live with this. We have reduced buying oil, vegetables and groceries by half,” Ms. Chitra says.

Despite many odds, the couple is firm on one thing: saving at least Rs.1,000 a month.

“We want to give our children good education. So we want to save for that.”
