Land survey near IAF base to be completed soon

Special Correspondent

Civic group representatives, officials meet

G.O. passed in November 2002 should be revoked, say residents

TAMBARAM: The Revenue Department is expected to complete the survey of lands that fall within 100 metres from Indian Air Force Station’s periphery in Tambaram. A meeting among representatives of civic groups in Tambaram, Selaiyur, Madambakkam and other areas around the IAF base and officials of the Tambaram Taluk office was held recently.

The meeting, according to the officials, was convened as per the instructions of the State government to listen to the grievances of the people living around the IAF Base in Tambaram. Members of Tambaram Air Force Station Surrounding Areas Affected Residents Welfare Association said that a Defence Ministry notification in 1903 had imposed restrictions on construction activity within 900 metres from any installation of IAF.

Even if the people had to build houses, they had to obtain a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the station commander of the respective IAF Base.

In November 2002, a Government Order from the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply had directed all urban and rural local bodies in Tamil Nadu to refrain from issuing building permits within this 900 metres.

And in February 2007, the Ministry eased the restrictions, bringing down the distance to 100 metres. According to the residents, now that the Defence Ministry had made its stand on construction very clear, it was upto the State government to act without delay. The GO passed in November 2002 should be revoked so that the local bodies could start issuing building permits.

After the meeting, P. Jayaraman, told reporters that the survey of areas, which came within 100 metres from the periphery of IAF Station, would be completed soon.

Among others who were present at the meeting were A.Janakiraman, former Tambaram Municipal Chairman and president of the association, and Victor Devasahayam, general secretary.

They said the development was significant as the easing restrictions would benefit several thousand families around Tambaram IAF Base.
