Neglect: A view of unused guest house for pilgrims, constructed in 1970 at Viralimalai in Pudukottai district.

PUDUKOTTAI: Even while the recent notification by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, declaring Viralimalai as a heritage town, has brought cheers to the locals, the state of a couple of guest-houses right on the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway, not far away from the foot of the Virali Hills, has left them irked.

The guest houses, declared open by the then Hindu Religious and Charitable Minister K. V. Subbiah on January 18, 1970, in the presence of the then Viralimalai MLA V.S. Ilanchezhian, have been lying in disuse and remained locked for the past several decades.

Villagers are sore over the sorry condition of these guest houses. S. Chandrasekaran, a villager, points out that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department should initiate action to repair them to benefit the pilgrims visiting the temple of Lord Subramanya atop the hillock.

Another villager, Mohan, while thanking the State Government for having realised the religious significance and heritage value of Viralimalai, who foresaw an influx of tourists and pilgrims to the village in the wake of the notification, said that immediate renovation of these guest houses would help the floating population.

According to the Executive Officer, Pudukottai Temples, B. Kadarkarai, a proposal has been sent to the HR and CE seeking special funds for renovating these guest houses to enhance revenue. Presently, the revenue from the temple was hardly enough to meet the expenditure for the daily rituals and footing the salary of the staff and power consumption charges. Many residents plead for setting up a bus-stand at Viralimalai.

In the absence of the bus-stand, buses stop at a couple of places on the National Highway, causing inconvenience to the road-users.
