Timely: S.N.M. Ubayathullah, Commercial Taxes Minister, releasing a book ‘Devaram Unarthum Vazhipadu’ to C. Subramaniam, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University in Thanjavur on Saturday.

Thanjavur: People should read Devaram hymns and use them for worship said S.N.M. Ubayathullah, State Commercial Taxes Minister here on Saturday.

He released the book ‘Devaram Unarthum Vazhipadu’ written by G.P. Nallasivam. The Minister said that people believe that some vibrations are realised when mantras are chanted. Because of this mindset they go for conducting marriages using mantras. But Tamil can be used for conducting festivals and worship of God.

He said that T.G. Paramasivanar, father of the author popularised Thirumurais by conducting classes for youth and singing them in his house. Thirumurais (Devarams) rendered by Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukarasar and Sundarar enriched Tamil language, Tamil art and culture and Saivism. The book assumes importance at a time when controversy has been raised by some people on using Tamil as a language of worship and object to singing Devarams in temples. In the book, Dr. Nallasivam has given details of temples about which Devarams have been sung, worship in Devarams, worship and art, society and worship.

C. Subramaniam, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, G. Baskaran, Registrar of Tamil University and N. Murugesan, Tamil Professor, Ka.Su.Su. Kalai Kaloori, Thirupanandal also spoke.
