“It’s time to review agriculture policies”
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Former BJP president Murali Manohar Joshi on Sunday said the time had come to review the policies in the agriculture sector to find out whether they had benefited the common man or increased the parity between the rich and poor.
Talking to reporters at the party headquarters here, Mr Joshi said the green revolution had “saturated,” and questioned the “scientific basis of the revolution.”
He attributed the current food crisis to “the defective agricultural technologies” which, he said, had been forced on many countries in the name of green revolution. “In Punjab, Haryana, and Western UP, the production is not increasing. The soil has eroded and losing its fertility.” What is true of India is also true of many countries in the world,” he said.
He suggested reorientation of the agriculture policy to suit the history, culture and food habit of a particular country.
“Agriculture is a culture and it is not a business,” he said.
Coming down on United States President George Bush for his comments that consumption of more food had led to food crisis, Mr. Joshi said Mr. Bush might not aware that large number of Indians were undernourished and sleeping without a meal a day.
