“Migration of labourers has come down”
Special Correspondent
TIRUVANNAMALAI: The migration of labourers to other States has come down considerably after the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in Tamil Nadu for the last two years, according to Director of Rural Development (DRD) Gagandeep Singh Bedi.
Talking to reporters here on Saturday after inspecting the NREGS works in Polur and West Arni panchayat unions in Tiruvannamalai district, Mr. Bedi said that Rs.610 crore had been distributed as wages to the workers and eight crore mandays generated under the NREGS in Tamil Nadu in the last two years. The scheme, which was originally implemented in six districts in the State from 2006-07, was extended to four more districts from 2008-09.
The scheme was being implemented in a commendable manner in Tiruvannamalai district. Workers could take up jobs under the scheme when they did not have any agricultural work. Each family would get work for a minimum of 100 days in a year, he said.
A sum of Rs.510 crore had been allotted through the Rural Development Department for the implementation of the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (AGAMT) in 171 village panchayats in the State. Each village would get a total of Rs.80 lakh under the scheme.
