Sanskrit scholar honoured

ALAPPUZHA: Noted Sanskrit scholar K.V. Seshadrinatha Sastrigal has been honoured with the ‘Dharma Shreshta’ award instituted by the Kerala Brahmana Sabha.

Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony presented Mr. Shastrigal with a plaque, citation and a ‘dakshina’ of Rs. 10,001 here.

Mr. Shastrigal, the former principal of the Madras Sanskrit College and an expert in astrology and Ayurveda, was selected for the award considering his contributions to the field of Veda studies and Sanskrit language. Born in 1934 and currently settled in Chennai, Mr. Shastrigal is still active in his sphere.

He was the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Ayurveda Board from 1974 to 1979 and has worked in several other positions including as a member of the Madras University Syndicate, vice-president of the Institute of Astrological Studies and as member of the Governing Body of the Union Government’s Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan.

The award function was among several programmes organised by the Kerala Brahmana Sabha as part of the 1220th Sri Shankara Jayanti celebrations. Seminars, public meetings, a Kalady pilgrimage and other programmes at various places will be part of the programmes that will continue till May 9, which has been declared as ‘Philosopher’s Day’ by the government.
