Meet on natural rubber

KOCHI: A two-day international conference on Natural Rubber Extension and Development, marking the conclusion of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Rubber Board’s extension and development schemes, will begin in the city on May 9.

Vayalar Ravi, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, will inaugurate the conference, Board chairman Sajan Peter told media persons.

State Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran will release the logo for Indian Natural rubber.

The logo is aimed at creating a brand image in the international market for natural rubber.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will present the award for excellence in extension to P. Mukundan Menon, former Rubber Production Commissioner.

Delegates from within the country and abroad, including Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and African countries, will participate in the conference, Mr. Peter said.

K. Krishnakumar, Rubber production Commissioner, will deliver the keynote address on trends in agricultural extension.

M.S. Swaminathan, agricultural scientist, will present a paper on ‘agricultural extension — the way forward’ on May 9. Pala Rubber marketing Society will be presented the best natural rubber exporter award.

An exhibition on the history of rubber plantations development and extension scheme will also be organised in connection with the conference, Mr. Peter said.
