Nagercoil, being the headquarters of Kanyakumari district, is one of the centres where a government engineering college is slated to function from this academic year and two locations, polytechnic campus of 25 acres and ITI campus of 11 acres, have been selected and now the State Govt is zeroing in on Government ITI Konam campus for the proposed engineering college. Though sufficient accommodation is available both at Polytechnic and ITI campus, it is disheartening to note that the part time BE classes continue to be conducted from a private polytechnic at Nagercoil instead of Government Polytechnic Nagercoil. V. Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district. Profit motiveThe railways are maintaining a standard of their own and the passengers’ fares have not been increased for the last four or five years. But the tatkal scheme is being operated with a profit motive by defeating the very purpose for which the scheme was originally introduced. The senior citizens also have not been spared. In the tatkal scheme, senior citizens are not provided with the age concession. All are treated alike. It is not understandable as to what rationale is behind the withdrawal of this benefit to the senior citizens. N. Kasilingam, Tuticorin. Broad gauge facilitiesTwo years ago, work on converting meter gauge into broad gauge on Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli rail route was started. But the conversion is not yet complete due to the snail’s pace action on the part of the authorities concerned. As a result, the shuttle trips from the temple town to Tirunelveli are delayed. And already, the commuters are eagerly waiting for an early start of the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli train services. Moreover, the largest number of the commuters are dependent on the services for a long time now. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan, Tuticorin district. Lack of drinking water facilityIt pains me on seeing villagers collecting water from a leaking pipe at Velayadhapram near Tuticorin. Many may not believe it that its a common scene nowadays in many villages in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts. More than 60 years have gone since we have got independence. But it is pathetic to know that there are many villages in our country without adequate drinking water facilities. The basic need of a citizen is yet to be fulfilled. S.J. Sylvestine, Koottapuly, Tirunelveli district.
