PUDUCHERRY: To spread awareness among women of the importance of early detection of cervical cancer, a free Pap smear camp was held on Monday. The camp was organised by the Puducherry chapter of the Society of Midwives India and the School of Nursing of Mother Theresa Institute of Health Sciences (MTIHS). Around 74 women underwent Pap smear tests. “Cervical cancer is completely treatable if it is detected at an early stage. There are no symptoms in the early stages, and it could be prevented only with periodic checks to avoid delayed diagnosis,” MTIHS Dean V. Balu said. In case of positive findings, the institute would inform the women within a week. Director of the Puducherry State Health Mission Revathi Baliga released a procedure book for auxiliary nurse midwife students.
