JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has sanctioned a grant of Rs.40,000 each to 148 bidi workers for construction of their houses this year and reserved land plots for their residential colonies in Karauli, Anta and Beawar. State Labour and Employment Minister Babulal Verma said here on Monday that attempts were being made to sanction subsidy for 500 houses for bidi workers under the integrated housing scheme and cover them under various welfare programmes .Addressing the 25th meet of the State Bidi Labour Welfare Organisation’s Consultative Committee here, Mr. Verma said scholarships amounting to Rs.79.94 lakh were released for over 7,400 children of bidi workers studying in schools during 2007-08. The Centre will shortly release a backlog of Rs.28 lakh for 2,800 students. The Bidi Labour Welfare Organisations have been established in all States under the Union Labour Ministry. Mr. Verma called upon the members of the committee to popularise welfare schemes among the bidi workers and pointed out that the State was drafting new proposals for subsidy for housing. Principal Labour and Employment Secretary Lalit K. Pawar said the welfare schemes for bidi workers included treatment for serious diseases, facility for institutional deliveries, family planning operations and opening of hospitals in the areas with their concentration.
