Plea to appoint ophthalmic assistants in PHCs
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: The Tamil Nadu Government Ophthalmic Assistants’ Association has sought appointment of ophthalmic assistants in all government hospitals and Primary Health Centres in the State.
At the State general body meeting held here on Sunday, the Association, passing a resolution, demanded that the assistants be designated as “ophthalmic officers” and their basic pay enhanced from Rs.4,500 to Rs.5,000, on a par with their Central government counterparts. It said the existing number dark rooms, set up at the rate of one per seven lakh population, was insufficient. The Association called for setting up of upgraded dark rooms, to the level of “vision centres”, in all PHCs and government hospitals.
Outdated equipment in darkrooms should be replaced with modern ones, such as auto refractometer and streak retinoscope. It urged the government to create necessary infrastructure for carrying out cataract surgery through phacoemulsification in free eye camps.
Mobile eye clinics
It called for the re-introduction of mobile eye clinics for better eye care in rural areas.
The certificate course in ophthalmology should be re-introduced in all government medical colleges.
