KANNUR: The drive-in beach at Muzhappilangad here will be the venue of ‘Beach Fest 2008’ beginning on May 7 under the joint auspices of the Muzhappilangad grama panchayat and the Muzhappilangad Service Cooperative Bank. The beach fest comprising entertainment and information facilities would give a fresh impetus to the development of the four-km-long palm-fringed beach as a major tourism destination in the district, district panchayat president K.K. Narayanan, who is the chairman of the organising committee, said at a press conference here on Monday. The grama panchayat was associating with the Swapnatheeram Tourism Information and Facility Centre to conduct the six-day festival. Olive Ridley turtlesThe beach with its shallow waters, mangroves and rural ambience is the only drive-in beach in the State where visitors can drive down the entire stretch of the beach. The grama panchayat is also involved in protecting the Olive Ridley turtles which reach the shore during the breeding season in December-January. This is also becoming a major attraction of the beach. Mr. Narayanan said that the fest was being organised to introduce to the outside world the tourism potential of the beach and to uphold the cultural and historical importance of the area. The festival would include entertainment programmes and informative exhibitions, he said. The exhibition would also have an amusement park, food fair specialising in sea food items, paragliding and horse riding, he said. The beach fest would begin with a cultural pageantry starting from Muzhappilangad to the beach at 3 p.m. on May 7. Film director Ranji Panikkar would formally inaugurate the fest on the beach at 4 p.m. Ramachandran Kadannappally, MLA, and District Collector Ishita Roy would be present at the function. There would be variety cultural programmes during the four days. Eranholli Moosa and party would present Mappilapattu May 8.
