Directive to produce details of poll expenses

Staff Correspondent

Erring candidates will face

action under Section 171 (1)

of IPC

Belgaum: The District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner M.E. Shivalingmurthy has asked those contesting the Assembly elections to produce the “register of accounts” to the designated officers on the dates scheduled.

“The failure to produce the register and supporting documents for inspection on the scheduled date and time will be treated as major default and the candidate will be proceeded against under Section 171 (1) of the Indian Penal Code by registering an FIR,” he said.

Official sources said here on Monday that under Section 77 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951, all candidates in an election to the State Assembly or their election agents were required to maintain day-to-day accounts of expenditure incurred by them in connection with the election, in a register in the prescribed format.

Register

The register, together with supporting documents, should be made available for inspection once in three days during the process of election — between the date on which a candidate has been nominated and the date of declaration of the results (both days inclusive).

Officials have been appointed for each of the 18 assembly constituencies in the district for verification of the “accounts of election expenses.”

All the candidates have been asked to furnish details of their poll exopenses incurred by them on May 8, 11, 14, 17 and 21 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Counting

On May 25, the day of counting of votes, the candidates should furnish the accounts between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The candidates can contact the Election Expenditure Observers between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at their notified residences.
