Objection with regard to Mr. Chavan’s caste overruled BIDAR: The nomination papers of Prabhu Chavan, Bharatiya Janata Party nominee in Aurad (reserved) seat, have been accepted. Scrutiny of nomination papers was carried out on Monday. An objection was raised with the Returning Officer of Aurad with regard to Mr. Prabhu Chavan’s caste. In the objection, it was said that Mr. Chavan hails from Banjara community and he cannot claim benefit meant for Scheduled Castes. The objection said that Banjara is a nomadic tribe and the community cannot be treated as Scheduled Castes (SC). Aurad became a reserved constituency for Scheduled Castes, after the delimitation process. Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, election officials told that Mr. Chavan’s caste, ration cards and property documents were verified and they were found to be correct. The officials said, “A report was sought from the Social Welfare Department which said that both Banjara and Lambani were synonymous in the State.” The Aurad seat assumes significance in the district, as Member of Parliament Narsingrao Suryavanshi is contesting on the Congress ticket. As many as 23 nomination papers were rejected by the Returning Officers in six Assembly seats of the district. As many as 195 nomination papers were filed by 119 candidates in the district and after scrutiny, 172 nomination papers have been accepted. In Bidar, the nomination papers of Baburao Gudge, district unit president of the Janata Dal (Secular), and Basavaraj Hade of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were rejected. In Bidar South, five nomination papers were rejected. They are those of Basavaraj, an independent, Syed Salam Pasha of the BSP, Mohammed Salim, an independent, and Prabhu Shetty, who had filed two sets on behalf of the Congress. In Aurad, nine nomination papers have been rejected. They include those of Ganapathrao Namdev, who had filed two sets on behalf of the BJP, Sharanappa Mallappa of the Congress, Charan Ramrao of the BJP who had filed two sets, Siddaramappa Shivalingappa of the Janata Dal(S), Vittalrao Manikrao of the Janata Dal(S) and Yashwanth Narsingh, an independent. In Bhalki, the nomination papers of Digamberrao of the BJP and Vijayakumar Kanaji of the Janata Dal(S) were rejected.
