BELLARY: With only 10 days to go for elections, campaigning in Bellary (city) has gathered momentum. Unlike in the previous elections, campaigning by all major political parties has been on low key due to the strict enforcement of the model code of conduct by the authorities. The city has been free from the usual election publicity materials such as banners, buntings, flex boards and the public address system. Candidates of all major political parties, including M. Diwakar Babu of the Janata Dal(S) candidate, G. Somashekar Reddy of the BJP and Anil Lad of the Congress, have been going on padayatra seeking votes and also addressing street-corner meetings promising to respond to people’s needs and improving basic civic amenities. In addition to door-to-door campaigning, the candidates have been holding meetings with various communities seeking their support. On Monday, groups of women were seen going round campaigning for the BJP candidate in Satyanarayanpet, Anthapur Colony, Golla Narasappa Colony and other wards. Meanwhile, the Cowl Bazaar police seized four vehicles and Rs. 1 lakh in cash from a group reportedly belonging to the BJP. Another vehicle transporting the Bahujan Samaj Party’s poll campaign material without permission was also seized, the police said.
