KOCHI: The Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) here has won the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Agni award for self-reliance. The award is for developing a sonar system for submarines by NPOL’s scientist S. Vijayan Pillai and his team. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will present the award on May 12. The Agni award is the highest DRDO honour for team effort by scientists. The NPOL submarine sonar system has enabled India to be self-reliant in this critical defence technology. The Navy has already replaced the imported sonar technology with the NPOL-developed technology. The sonar system, using reflected sound, helps submarines’ underwater navigation. – Special Correspondent
