VS: anarchy in higher education

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has expressed concern over the prevailing situation in the higher education sector, which, according to him, is “anarchic.”

Inaugurating the silver jubilee session of the Mahatma Gandhi University Employees Association here on Monday, the Chief Minister said that universities which should rein in private college managements were expressing their helplessness at the actions of a section of these managements.

Management flayed

According to him, a section of the private managements under MG University was known for brash expression of self-righteousness. Their actions had pushed a student to suicide and forced another to take the warpath as she was victimised for actions of her father against the management, he noted.

The Chief Minister said creation of new posts was out of the question and called upon the employees to introspect whether they were true to their claims when it came to performing their duties.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the workload had in fact come down following delinking of the pre-degree course and coming down of private registration. He, however, said that the government would expedite steps to fill existing vacancies.
