Weaving units go on three-day strike
Staff Reporter
KARUR: All weaving units in Karur district began a three-day strike on Monday to highlight their grievances, especially the steep increase in the price of yarn.
Other textile industry-related units will put up the shutters on Wednesday to express solidarity with the striking weavers.
The weavers allege that the price of yarn—especially the varieties most popular in the district such as 2/17s, 10s and 6s—have gone up by at least 15 per cent in the past month. The abnormal price rise has led to uncertainty in the textile industry. While exporters are worried about the costing and shipping schedules, the weavers who cater for the reasonably good domestic market are hamstrung by the severe fluctuations in the industry because of the variations in the yarn price.
The office-bearers of the Karur District Weaving and Knitting Factory Owners’ Association said two rounds of discussions with yarn traders and other stakeholders did not help to stabilise the price. They sought the immediate intervention of the government. The strike was total, and paralysed weaving operations in the entire district.
