CHANDIGARH: Wheat lifting in Punjab has touched 93.70 lakh tonnes during the ongoing rabi marketing season, which is the highest procurement figure for the last three years. Out of total procurement, FCI and State Government agencies have lifted 89.04 lakh tonnes so far for the Central pool which accounts for 95 per cent of the total procurement. State agencies procured 2.2 lakh tonnes for the State pool while private millers bought 2.43 lakh tonnes. The total lifting of wheat from Punjab amounted to 92.72 lakh tonnes, 80.90 lakh tonnes and 79.67 lakh tonnes in 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively, according to data provided by FCI. Out of the State agencies, PUNGRAIN procured 1,663,388 tonnes, MARKFED 2,112,746 tonnes, PUNSUP 2,037,565 tonnes, PSWC 1,120,706 tonnes and PAIC 1,016,036 tonnes of wheat for the Central pool. The Central Government agency FCI has been able to procure 953,885 tonne for the Central pool. The spokesman said that in addition MARKFED procured 69,413 tonnes, PUNSUP 76,238 tonnes and PAIC 46,541 tonnes for the State pool. Ferozepur leadsFerozepur district with 1,074,879 tonnes is leading in procurement operations whereas Sangrur district with 920,642 tonnes is second and Ludhiana district with 813,055 tonnes third. The Punjab Government and FCI have made a payment of more than Rs.8916 crore to the farmers of the State for wheat procured up to May 3, the spokesman added. -- PTI
