Alleges it has marred the State’s attempt to achieve food security Says internal bickering prevents the LDF from addressing crucial issues ALAPPUZHA: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has alleged that attempts of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to play big brother and suppress CPI’s voice have marred the State’s attempt to achieve food security. Inaugurating the delegates’ session of a district conference of the Congress here on Monday, Mr. Chennithala said there was no decision on the food security scheme at Sunday’s Cabinet meeting because of “mere disagreements” over who should head the mission. “If the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was concerned about food security, it would not have bothered about such trivial issues. Sunday’s meeting proves that internal bickering in the LDF is behind the government’s failure in addressing crucial issues in the State,” he said. “The CPI(M) is trying to take control over the Agriculture, Food and Civil Supplies departments held by the CPI. On the other hand, the Finance Ministry, held by the CPI(M), is not ready to part with any funds for the scheme, saying the scheme should be implemented with funds already allocated to the Agriculture and Food departments. Instead of calling in all political parties, farmers and other public representatives to see how fast the scheme could be implemented, the LDF is politicising the entire issue and making the public a scapegoat,” the KPCC president said. Mr. Chennithala said the LDF had failed to provide any succour to farmers in the State. Not a single pie from the Rs.51-crore announced for debt-ridden farmers in Wayanad had been distributed so far while the much-touted Farmers Debt Relief Commission was yet to get into the act. Comprehensive planCongress leader V.M. Sudheeran said the LDF should immediately formulate a comprehensive policy on food security. Former Ministers P.C. Chacko, M.M. Hassan and Damodaran Kalassery, DCC president A.A. Shukoor, K.C. Venugopal, P.C. Vishnunath, M. Murali, and B. Babu Prasad, MLAs, Mahila Congress State president Shanimol Usman and others were present.
