‘Inhaled steroids effective treatment for asthma’

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: “Inhaled steroids are the safest and most effective treatment for asthma. Unfortunately, it is underutilised in India owing to reasons of cost, access and ignorance,” according to Raj B. Singh, managing trustee of the Chest Foundation of India.

Addressing a seminar on the occasion of the World Asthma Day, Dr. Singh said many Indian patients, and even doctors, wrongly feared the possible side-effects of inhaled steroids. “It is safe even for children and pregnant women.”

The seminar was on the implementation of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines. GINA, founded by the World Health Organisation and the U.S.-based National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, has produced well-researched documents on asthma treatment. S.K. Rajan, emeritus professor of medicine of Stanley Medical College, said the government need to provide support for asthma awareness and education programmes so that the GINA guidelines could be implemented.
