Creating an icon

The article “Another kind of ‘icon’” (Open Page, May 4) was well-timed. With almost every television channel getting into the business of creating an icon, introspection is certainly the need of the hour. The basic premise on which the television programmes are built is that icons can be created, which itself is shaky. Icons evolve by virtue of their actions. SMSs and votes don’t make icons. When we need glamour to sell even blades, the only persons who reap the benefit of such programmes are the TV channels and the well-paid glamour icons.

The view expressed in the article is shared by many. The media, particularly television, are to blame for idolising film stars and cricket stars. They certainly do not deserve the extent of attention and coverage they get on television.

Philip John,

New Delhi
