Corrections and clarifications

The caption of a standalone picture “Chillies on fire” (May 4, 2008, page 1) was “Guntur Blaze: A massive fire caused extensive damage to Asia’s largest chilli market yard at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. Chilli stocks, cold storage units and over 450 shops were destroyed in the fire that broke out when a truck hit overhead electric wires, causing a short circuit”, while the fourth paragraph in a report “Guntur fire: early estimates put loss at Rs. 85 crore” (Inside pages, May 4, 2008) said “The fire was ignited by a spark from an overhead high tension power line when a lorry loaded with chilli bags hit a pole while reversing ….” The detail in the report is right.

A sentence in an article “(Ar)omavalli!” (PropertyPlus, Chennai edition, May 3, 2008, page 8) was “Taken orally, the juice from its crushed leaves is effective in bringing out flem.” It should have been phlegm.

A sentence in “Well deserved suspension” (Editorial, April 30, 2008) was “The last Olympic gold for the seven-time champion [India] came 28 years ago.” It should have been eight-time champion. The Indian hockey team is an eight-time Olympic gold medallist — in 1928 (Amsterdam), 1932 (Los Angeles), 1936 (Berlin), 1948 (London), 1952 (Helsinki), 1956 (Melbourne), 1964 (Tokyo) and 1980 (Moscow).

In the Coimbatore city edition (May 4, 2008), the accompanying photograph in an article on page 1 “Hold more Lok Adalats, CJI tells High Courts” did not have a caption. This was caused by a technical error. (The caption should have been “Speedy Justice: The first Supreme Court Lok Adalat in progress in the court complex in New Delhi on Saturday. — Photo: Shanker Chakravarty.)

In “Corrections and Clarifications” (May 3, 2008), the date of the article mentioned in the entry, “Nurse held on charges of negligence”, should have been May 2, 2008, and not May 3, 2008 as was published.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
