Coast Guard rescues Vietnam vessel
Special Correspondent
VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Coast Guard (ICG) vessel Sagar rescued the 15,000 tonne Vietnamese cargo vessel, m.v. Sao Bein-09, on the high seas on Saturday when it was stranded due to the entanglement of a fishing net in its propeller.
It was drifting even as the cyclonic storm ‘Nargis’ brewed over the bay.
Talking to media persons here on Monday, ICG DIG and Commander of District 6 (Andhra Pradesh) G.P. Raj said all 19 Vietnamese crew members of the 79-metre-long vessel were safe.
There was no damage to the vessel. The ship was towed by Sagar itself to the port here, as tug operators refused to operate in the choppy seas.
The ship was going to Hafam (Vietnam) from Kakinada and got stuck at 225 nautical miles (405km) south-east of here. After the ICG Dornier aircraft located the vessel, Sagar, led by DIG K.P.S. Raghuvanshi, sailed from Chennai and rescued it, Mr. Raj said. In Visakhapatnam, another ICG ship Vivek was kept as stand by, he said.
