NEW DELHI: The Delhi police on Monday claimed to have solved the mystery behind the sensational murder of a woman and her daughter at Kalkaji here this past week with the arrest of the woman’s son-in-law. The bodies of 58-year-old Asha and her 28-year-old daughter Alka were found lying in a pool of blood in their J Block DDA flat on Friday evening. It was prima facie suspected to be a case of robbery as over Rs.6 lakh in cash was missing from the house. Also, the entry into the premises was friendly and there was no ransacking in the house, suggesting that the assailant was known to the family and he knew exactly where the money was. During investigation, several relatives and acquaintances of the deceased were questioned by the police who eventually zeroed in on Asha’s son-in-law Arun Lal, who was unemployed and seemingly in desperate need of money. He also knew about the money, as he had been closely involved in a deal for sale of an Uttam Nagar plot by the family. “He was found carrying Rs.11,000, but could not satisfactorily explain from where he had got the money. It made us further suspicious and he was subjected to sustained interrogation. He eventually broke down and confessed to having committed the crime,” said a senior police officer on Monday. The police claim to have recovered Rs.5.70 lakh of the missing cash and the grindstone used in the crime.
