CPI (M) to agitate against price rise

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday announced that it will organise a movement against price rise across the State from May 10 to 15.

Addressing a press conference here, the secretary of the State unit of the party, Janardan Pati, blamed the Centre for decreasing the rice quota for the State.

Mr. Pati also blamed the State Government for not taking strong action against the hoarders and unscrupulous traders. He alleged that the State Government had failed to prevent recycling of rice meant for distribution through the public distribution system. Many rice merchants were exporting rice meant for PDS from the State to different countries, he alleged.

‘Streamline PDS’

He demanded that the PDS system should be streamlined without delay to save the common man from the problem of price rise.

Giving details of the party’s agitation programme against price rise, Mr. Pati said that rallies and meeting would be held across the State starting from May 10. The party workers would stage law-breaking agitation in different parts of the State to oppose rise in essential commodities and demand necessary measure to tackle the crisis on May 15.

Commenting on the poor response that the BJP’s bandh received a few days ago, Mr. Pati said that the party lacked sincerity in taking up the issue.
