Kendrapara: Two fishermen were grievously injured in an attack by the salt-water crocodiles in the past two days inside the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, the official sources said here on Monday. The attacks were reported from Mahuri and Bajarpur villages located on the down stream of Baitarani river. Both the fishermen were undergoing treatment at the hospital here and their condition is stated to be out of danger. Breeding seasonForest officers said the fishermen were attacked as the reptiles tend to be violent during breeding season. The number of crocodiles in the sanctuary has been rising steadily and the latest census stated that more than 1,400 crocodiles are living in the water bodies inside the sanctuary. Due to shortage of food in the river, the crocodiles stray into the nearby rivulets and nullahs and are more likely to attack humans. The wildlife experts are keeping a watch over the behaviour of these crocodiles, the forest officials stated. - PTI
